A nine-year-old Grade 3 student from Clarion School Henry Zielinski recently had an inspiring learning experience, which highlights the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority’s commitment to enriching student education. During a field trip to Al Shindagha’s Merkaz Turath, particularly the Bait al Bahar (Sea House), Henry was transported back in time to explore the UAE’s rich maritime heritage, leaving a lasting impact on his imagination and curiosity.
The visit allowed Henry to dive into past generations’ challenges and innovations, learning about traditional dhows, pearl diving equipment, and vintage photographs. The exhibits sparked his fascination with life in the UAE before the modern era. Among the many displays, Henry was especially captivated by the intricate models crafted by Mr. Younis Mahmoud Mohammad, an Artist & Historian at Merkaz Turath’s Bait Al Bahar.
This deep dive into the nation’s history ignited Henry’s curiosity about the UAE’s geological background, particularly the Hajar Mountains and their significance in limestone mining in Fujairah. Motivated bywhat he had learned, Henry embarked on an ambitious project to create a detailed model of the Hajar Mountains and a limestone mine, drawing a direct connection between his life and the historical practices he had discovered. “I wanted to show how people used to live and work here,” he explained, adding, “The mountains and the mines were a big part of their lives. And now these are a part of my life too. My father runs a limestone quarry.”
Henry’s model, a meticulous and imaginative portrayal of the rugged terrain and mining operations, has been praised by teachers, parents, and classmates alike. Ms. Mehwish Akram, his teacher at Clarion School, commended his creativity and passion. “Henry’s project is a wonderful example of how learning can inspire creativity and a deeper understanding of history. He has truly captured the essence of the past,” she said.
The Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (The Department of Cultural and Heritage Programs) recognized Henry’s effort, and he was awarded a Certificate For Participation in the marine industries workshops at the Heritage Center for Traditional Handicrafts in 2024. Mr Younis presented the same to him.
The Dubai Culture & Arts Authority’s role in fostering educational experiences like this demonstrates its commitment to supporting student learning and nurturing young minds. Henry’s journey through history is a testament to his curiosity and an inspiration for other students to connect with their heritage and explore new horizons. As Henry continues his exploration of the UAE’s past, he hopes to inspire his friends to learn more about their home country.
