To find out how to ensure that your smile looks as natural and beautiful as possible, we interviewed doctor Iulian Negruvoda, General Dentist, Oral Surgeon & Cosmetic Dentistry and Dubai’s Smile Makeover Dentist.
Does everyone interested in improving their smile need a full mouth makeover?
Absolutely not. Sometimes all it takes to improve a smile is whitening and the replacement of yellowish or silver fillings. In several cases we just need to place couple of veneers to fill in some gaps, or fix some lumineers with bonding, or place a crown so their smile looks perfect. Not all veneers are created equal and not all dentists are truly qualified to place them.
Dr Iulian, why did you choose Dubai and is there an urge of cosmetic dentistry nowadays?
I have earned a Masters Degree in Dentistry and Oral Surgery and while I was so excited to start my career back home, I soon realized that in order to fulfill my passion in dental art, I needed a place where I could get a demand for smile makeover. I needed also a place where I could regularly attend cosmetic dentistry courses to keep up with the latest technologies. I chose Dubai to be this place. Dubai has everything under one hub and I can happily do what I am best at.
My focus is on customized cosmetic dentistry so the client doesn’t feel that he is just another one amongst those waiting in the reception. I want to take the time to actually listen. There are many factors to consider and every case is unique.
We take our time and do our very best to be sure the client is comfortable before, during and after every visit. We also take the time to explain in as much detail as possible as it is very important for the client to know what he is getting into. Cosmetic dentistry is similar to cosmetic surgery in the sense that different doctors have a different style, different approach and perception, and therefore different doctors are right for different people.
What should a consumer look for when choosing a doctor?
First look at doctor’s work and then look at his training. This is very important because cosmetic dentistry is not a board-certified specialty and it has to do a lot with creativity and designing techniques.
What else can one do to ensure the work is exactly what was hoped and paid for?
Choosing your dentist is one of the most important decisions as it is not only about your smile makeover, it is also about getting a healthy smile. Be certain that the before and after photos belong to real patients of that particular doctor. Dentists can sometimes purchase stock photos for advertising purposes so be sure of what you are looking at. In short, you need to get to know the doctor and be absolutely comfortable with his style, personality, experience, artistry and training before you have any work done. In my experience, when patients take these steps they find a stunning smile and lasting comfort. When we talk about the price being paid, you have to understand the differences between composite resin veneers and porcelain veneers and the advantages they have to offer. The porcelain veneers offer the most natural, tooth-like aesthetics, they also have a translucent quality that is quite similar to tooth enamel being highly resistant to staining and chipping due to the strength of the material. You have to know as well that the price of porcelain veneers is noticeable higher than composite veneers but the durability of each highly differ as well.
What type of materials do you use for Smile Design?
The technology for dental materials and procedures has improved significantly. Truly, stained teeth can be whitened, crooked teeth straightened with invisible aligners, broken and chipped teeth repaired with few layers of filling, and missing teeth replaced with zirconium crowns or porcelain veneers. What used to take years is now done in just a few visits with amazing quality. The benefit of these advances is that we are now able to create the most natural looking smiles dentistry has ever been able to provide. Some smiles only need a little help while others may need a multidisciplinary approach. It matters who you go to. Do your research and let us help you get the answers you need.
What are the steps you use for a Smile Makeover?
We start with a consultation with an intra-oral camera with video views & panoramic x-ray to examine what goes beyond the smile as we need to make sure the teeth and gums are healthy before proceeding with a Smile Design.
The next step is video & photo shoot, followed by the part where we take impressions for a ‘smile mock up’ created in the lab. I will then apply the temporary teeth (from the smile mock up) and will make a presentation to the patient with a before and after video of his smile. This is a very emotional part as the patient gets to see how his future smile will look like. Once the patient feels comfortable with his new smile, we then proceed with the Smile Design, which is quite extensive work. Of course each case is different but mostly i start with gums & dental works before proceeding with smile makeover with porcelain veneers.
The final step of SMILE DESIGN involves preparing all the teeth for the final porcelain veneers, which were carefully prepared by the ceramist in the Lab who customizes the veneers to match the client’s requirement as well as matching his maxillofacial bite. The veneers are applied one by one and the results are very natural, it is truly a combination of Art and Science.
